Value chain analysis and mapping

A study completed for the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries that required detailed value stream mapping and cost analysis for a number of Australian Tropical Fruits. Some of the value chain analysis include:

  • Fresh pineapples from Philippines to Japan (and Australia should access be granted)
  • Philippines mango (fresh and puree) into Hong Kong, China and Japan
  • South African mango and avocado into the EU

Compost Supply Chain Roadmap

A major study for the national Compost Industry of behalf of the Waste Management Association of Australia. Compost Australia and the Barton Group. This study was the first examination of the entire Recycled Industry from policy intervention in supply management through local governments, processors, advisors and end-users. The project involved rigorous data mapping of the current and potential supplies of material, diversion from landfill initiatives, processor location and scale, markets (current and future) and competitor products.

The project required a review of the very extensive literature resources, extensive industry consultation, the preparation and facilitation of 5 national conferences and post-reporting, through the conduct of 15 workshops to deliver the final outcomes to a wide cross section of stakeholders.

The “roadmap” report was launched by Minister Macfarlane and the full copy can be viewed at the following site. http://www.wmaa.com.au/roadmap/CSCR.pdf

China Citrus Mapping

Engaged by the FAO to map the import supply chain for imported citrus into China, comparing the official prices and margins to those experienced via “grey channel” entry. The study required an assessment of the infrastructure and transport accessibility in addition to an assessment of the likely prices post WTO access by China.

Australian Banana Industry Value Chain costs

Grower costs of production by region were mapped comparing best practice to regional averages. A number of banana wholesalers were also benchmarked to establish the average cost of production and the DC and retail costs assessed to obtain an entire value-stream cost analysis.

Hong Kong Table Grape Competitiveness

The Hong Kong and China market competitiveness was mapped for both domestic Chinese production of table grapes versus Australian, US and Chilean imports.

Pork Production – Value Chain and Competitiveness

We completed a complex examination of the pork production costs pertaining in Western Canada and modeled t the likely impact on its competitiveness given changes in costs through the production, processing and fabrication stages of the value chain.

Industry assessment

Ord Sugar Industry Analysis

Faced with possible closure of the industry due to depressed world prices brought about by Brazilian dominance in the industry, this study was commissioned by the Korean owners of the mill to assess longer term viability including value-added options. As part of this process, we mapped the value streams from the Ord growers to Surabaya and provided comparative cost analysis of the key activities: growing, harvesting, milling, fobbing and freight to Surabaya. These comparisons were made with Queensland and Brazil.

Australian Table Grape Industry

A study have recently completed an Industry Discussion Paper for this industry. The discussion paper required wide industry consultation given the wide fragmentation in the industry – in part due to poor returns as a result of increased domestic pressure from closure of the Chinese market, poor domestic quality and increased competition from other fruits.

Beef Industry Assessment

A complete review of the beef industry by region was undertaken for one of the national banks. In completing this assessment value chain profitability was undertaken as well as the drivers of profitability.

Market identification

Asian Meat Consumption Trends

An analysis of the trends in consumption of major meats within the Asian region was made. The major factors impacting on consumption, future influences, including changing tariffs and local production capacity were highlighted.

Entry into the Chinese Beef Market

Access for foreign firms into the Chinese beef market was examined. A number of foreign firms are entering the market through joint-venture processing arrangements within the country while a smaller number are supplying from country of origin. The likely benefits for each strategy and market growth potential were identified.

Pickled Vegetables for the Japanese Market

The trends in the Japanese production and consumption of pickled vegetables were assessed as having a comparative advantage for our client. Japanese production of pickled vegetables was identified as moving off-shore, principally to China and, to a lesser extent Korea. Consumer tastes were moving from the traditionally heavily salted product to a less salty product. Key varieties were identified as having an increasing market share.

The Asian Market for Fresh and Concentrated Apple Products

With China’s production of apples exceeding 14 million tonnes, the likely impact of production still to be achieved was assessed. Fresh consumption in the region was analysed and the barriers to intra-Asian trade compared to barriers for fruit from other regions. Trends in the juice market were compared with trends in the soft drink market and the growth in apple juice consumption projected.

Fresh and Processed Mango Processing - China

A detailed study of the likely impacts on a significant investment in mango planting for both the fresh and processed market was conducted. The study examined the growth in mango based fruit drinks in China, the current and projected supply of mango concentrate for Chinese processors and the likely increase in the consumption of fresh mango.

Hong Kong Fresh Vegetable Market

David Hanlon undertook a study of the opportunities for the production and supply of fresh vegetables into this market. Quality, timing of supply and price were examined for all products considered.

Tropical Pasture Seed Production and Marketing Study

This was an economic and market study of major tropical and rangeland pasture seeds study. The study involves site selection in northern Australia, evaluation of production technology and processes, and the preparation of a financial and management plant for the operation.

A large multi-national with a strong presence in Australia commissioned an assessment of the Australian market for phosphate supplements. The market for cattle supplements of phosphates changed substantially with the banning of superphosphate usage as a phosphate base. The study required the target market to be defined, and the identification of major suppliers, their products and the likely factors to influence purchase of supplements.

The Market Opportunities for Blended Sugar Products

A major sugar mill commissioned a study into the expansion of its value added products. The pasture seed market was also studied and market niches identified.

With competition from mainland Malaysia, The Netherlands and Thailand, pricing and timing were critical issues in transport logistics. The study identified the major plants imported by quantity, carriers, prices and quality.

Fresh vegetables from Southern China to Northern Mainland Cities

This study required an in-depth review of the rail and sea freight availability for the transport of fresh vegetables to northern China. Container availability and impact on costs was examined in detail.
